ABOUT EFFETTO PALLA ONLUS

PALLA
Palla

Effetto Palla Onlus was born from the story of Palla, the little dog rescued in 2016 by the Duemari Veterinary Clinic in Oristano, Sardinia (Italy), after she was found with a nylon tie that had swollen and disfigured her head. That case went viral across Italy, and from it veterinarian Monica Pais and the DueMari team developed a permanent project dedicated to “scraps” and “animals belonging to no one” — that is, strays and animals that are injured, abused, or hit by cars, without an owner and often with no possibility of receiving care.

The way they call their animals, it’s not to label them, but to show exactly who they choose to stand beside: the ones the system leaves out because care is expensive or because there’s no owner to pay. In their hands those animals are treated anyway, thanks to donations. It’s the direct thread back to Palla’s story, because she too was one of those almost-lost cases.

WHAT THEY DO FOR ALL ANIMALS

They care for and rescue animals in critical condition: every year they are able to provide medical and surgical treatment to about 200 animals that arrive in very serious shape (fractures, trauma, neglected mange, abuse). Without this kind of intervention, most of them would simply die on the street.

Effetto Palla Onlus works with the DueMari Veterinary Clinic, which is the actual operational hub where rescued animals are hospitalized and treated. The association’s role is to create the network, raise funds, and ensure that these rescues remain sustainable over time. Although based in Sardinia, they have built a network of volunteers and veterinary practices throughout Italy.

The organization also places animals in adoption, it doesn’t send them back to the street: rescued animals are not just discharged, but a “human family” is actively sought for them, so there is constant work on rehoming and awareness.

A report from 2025 highlights that, since their foundation, they have found a new home for 230 dogs. In Palla’s name, they managed to place all these dogs, proving that the organization is growing day by day.

INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

“Palla in Brazil” was created to fund and run training courses for veterinary assistants for young people from the favelas of São Paulo, in partnership with the Padre Leo Commissari Association. Since 2019 they have bought equipment, run 120-hour courses (almost 40 students in the first year), and combined training with concrete animal care: food supplies (about 9,000 kg of kibble per year), spay/neuter and treatment for around 250 abandoned dogs near the Cantareira forest, with about 50 adoptions a year. During Covid the courses moved online and, thanks to Effetto Palla, a small veterinary health facility for the animals of the nearby favelas was opened in 2022, where some of the trained youths can now work.

Effetto Palla also supported “BasKenya”, the initiative of Sardinian volunteer Salvatore Correddu to build a basketball court in West Pokot, Kenya. After months of fundraising and obstacles, the court was completed, dedicated to young Oristano player Luca Porru, and inaugurated with a local tournament. Through Effetto Palla, about €15,000 were raised to help make the court — and the dream of those kids — a reality.
